First Firefox 2.0 Beta Released

Posted by Antoine Quint apropos implementations on Thu Jul 13th, 2006 at 08:56:43 BST

The Mozilla Corporation just released the first Firefox 2.0 beta, the upcoming upgrade to the popular Firefox browser. This release is mostly intended to be focused security and user interface, with new anti-phishing features and enhancement to tab browsing. However, the Gecko web page rendering component has a few upgrades too, and now the SVG <textPath> is supported. The next major Firefox release, Firefox 3.0, codename Minefield, will usher in more critical updates to the SVG support.

You can now download the 3.0 alpha from the mozilla SVN. It's actually got some pretty nice new features. I've noticed a few memory leak issues myself with 2.0 Dave Davis

Let's look forward to Firefox 3.0.
One of the things that has bothered Firefox's creators has been it's inability to pass the Acid2 browser test. A recent alpha release of Firefox 3.0 has been able to pass thanks to changes in it's rendering engine. Now Firefox can pass it will join the likes of Safari and Opera in being able to say it is truely (or at least as near as possible) standards compliant. And, of course this puts them another step ahead of Microsoft with Internet Explorer.

i love the firefox-browser and hope that the comming versions are not to overloaded with features, because it was the simple and stable working that awarded the browser.

I especially love the function to restore sessions after a sudden crash. This is SO useful in day by day research work. I'm using FF on a Mac since there was a stable release and I must admit it's way cooler (with all these plug-ins and stuff) than Apple's Safari... b rgds echthaarperuecke
